After the formation of Kerala state, the Attappady region became part of Perinthalmanna Taluk in Palakkad district. Later, Mannarkkad Taluk was formed and the Agali, Pudur, and Sholayur panchayats came into existence. The Irula, Muduga, and Kurumba tribes were the original inhabitants of Attappady. During the 1960s, many people migrated there from different parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu and started cultivating crops such as coffee, pepper, cardamom, cotton, and maize. The Irula community is the largest tribal group in Agali Panchayat. Historical place names like Kottathara, Thavalam, and Mukkali are believed to be connected with Tipu Sultan’s military campaigns. The Chemmannur Malleshwara temple festival is one of the major tribal festivals in Attappady. Lighting the lamp on Malleshwaramudi during Shivaratri is an important ritual of the festival. Former Panchayat President Mr. Avarachan led environmental movements in Attappady. Agali Grama Panchayat was officially formed in 1962 along with the Attappady Block Panchayat.
